Martha Callaway Day

Mrs. Martha Callaway Day, 89, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at Legacy Village of Tifton.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Our Divine Saviour Catholic Church with Deacon J. Brian Bergeron and Father Peter Oyenugba officiating. Interment will follow in Oakridge Cemetery.The Rosary will be held at Albritton Funeral Directors Friday, April 12th at 6:30 p.m. The family will receive friends following the Rosary until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Ken Martin, Al Gibbs, Gary Burtle, Danny Ross, Bill McDaniel and Morris Scarborough.

Mrs. Day was born November 10, 1929 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia to the late Hugh Thomas Callaway, Sr., and May Clark Callaway. She was preceded in death by her brother, Hugh Thomas Callaway, Jr., and his wife, Sara Blanchard Callaway and infant sister, Mary Clark Callaway. Mrs. Day graduated from Mason Academy, Lexington, Ga., in 1946 and graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Education and Library Science. Her teaching career began in Toccoa, Ga., in 1950 followed by Athens, Ga., Ft. Benning and Memphis, TN. In 1968, she began teaching at Len Lastinger Elementary where she retired with 30 years in 1989. Her years at Len Lastinger Elementary she considered the best years of her career. She felt blessed to have worked with such a dedicated and caring group under the leadership of three outstanding principals, Mr. Len Lastinger, Dr. Hansel Allen and Dr. Al Gibbs.

Mrs. Day was a very active member of Our Divine Saviour Catholic Church since 1965. She was a member of the choir, served on the Parish Council, a member of the Catholic Women’s Group and was an instructor in the RCIA program. Mrs. Day enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking and was an avid reader. She was a founding member of ABAC Newcomers Club and a charter member of ABAC Women’s Club, serving as the first president. She was a member of the ABAC President Club and was a loyal supporter of ABAC.

Mrs. Day is survived by her husband, Dr. Joseph J. Day of Tifton, to whom she was married 65 years. One son, J. Jerome Day and his wife Lori Day of Kennesaw; two grandchildren, Shawn Day and Kelly Day Wood and her husband, Bradford; one nephew, Hugh Callaway, III.
